Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy)
Vernon Francis "Frank" Gallagher is the father of six children. He is a deadbeat alcoholic, drug addict and morally deficient freeloader who relies on his children to barely get by. He also swindles the state welfare system and this type of opportunistic deceit has been learned by his children. According to Fiona, since Frank refuses to work and most of them are uneducated, the family lives far below the federal poverty threshold for a family their size. Frank did attend college to study psychology, where he met Monica. They had only dated for about 2 weeks before they got married. Frank is the biological father of Sammi, Fiona, Lip, Debbie, Carl, and Liam, but not of Ian, who is the children's half-brother and cousin. The children refer to their father as Frank. Although Frank pontificates self-righteously about political and social issues, he spends most of his time developing schemes to cheat the system and take advantage of others in order to make money. He pays little attention to his children but can display care and concern for them in drastic circumstances.
Fiona Gallagher (Emmy Rossum)
Fiona Gallagher age 26, is the eldest of the Gallagher children. Because of her mother's absence and Frank's neglect, most of the responsibility for child-rearing falls on her shoulders which forces her out of high school in her junior year. Fiona works a few dead-end minimum-wage jobs to support her five siblings. Though often stressed and exhausted by her responsibilities, she always performs them. Prone to selflessness, she sometimes needs to be reminded to look out for her own happiness. Even though Fiona wants everything under control, she enjoys a little bit of chaos once in a while. At the close of season 2, Fiona receives her GED and begins to take more interest in jobs. In season 3, after Frank calls social services out of sheer spite, Fiona wins a court case (and with the admiration of the judge) is appointed her siblings' legal guardian. This strains her relationship with Jimmy.
Lip Gallagher (Jeremy Allen White)
Phillip Ronan "Lip" Gallagher aged 22, is the second Gallagher child and is the most academically minded. In high school he was a straight-A student. He created various money-making schemes to help the Gallagher clan survive, such as running an ice cream truck that also sold beer and marijuana. He also made money by taking the SATs for fellow students for a fee, but had to stop when he was caught by Professor Hearst, an investigator from the Educational Evaluation Service. After testing Lip in private, Hearst discovers Lip is one of the statistically very rare students capable of achieving a perfect SAT score and offers him an internship at the robotics lab at the University of Chicago, which Lip turns down. Hearst gets Lip in trouble with his past clients by invalidating all of their SAT scores, since they didn't actually take the tests themselves.
Ian Gallagher (Cameron Monaghan)
Ian Clayton Gallagher was born in 1996 in Metz, and is often the most strong-hearted, persistent, and goofy and reckless- third oldest child in the Gallagher family. He is presumably the product of a PCP-fueled affair between his mother Monica Gallagher and Frank Gallagher's brother, Clayton Gallagher, in the summer of 1995. Ian has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder like his mother Monica. He was in a relationship with the aggressive neighbourhood thug, Mickey Milkovich, and was best friends with Mickey's sister, Mandy Milkovich.
Debbie Gallagher (Emma Kenney)
Deborah "Debbie"/"Debs" Gallagher (Emma Kenney) aged 16, is one of the middle Gallagher children. She is plain and reserved yet keen to impress. Debbie will cover for others but is not brash or reckless like her older brothers. She forgives her father's neglect and irresponsibility as well as her mother's absence. She is very mature in some ways and therefore has trouble making friends with people her age. In season 3, Debbie becomes a teenager and is more rebellious, disrespectful, and secretive like her siblings. In season 4, her friends Holly and Ellie glamorize sexual promiscuity. Debbie meets the twenty-year-old Matty (James Allen McCune) and tries to seduce him, but is rejected because of their age disparity. Debbie meets another guy her age named Derrick and she has his daughter in season 5
Carl Gallagher (Ethan Cutkosky)
Carl Francis Gallagher is the fifth youngest Gallagher child. When he was younger he shared a room with his older brothers Lip and Ian. Carl is seen as a trouble maker in season 1 after almost facing expulsion. In season 2, his love for selling drugs starts when his grandmother Peg convinced him to get prescription drugs to make meth. We don't see a lot of the bad side of Carl in season 3 but he does end up shaving his head due to lice but Frank convinced him that it was cancer. We see Carl's first love interest Bonnie who lives in a van with the rest of her family but the love show soon ends when Bonnie's family leaves. In season 5 he uses his nephew "Chuckie" to deliver drugs but gets caught because Frank notified the police. In trial Fiona wants Carl to grovel but instead he insults the judge and doesn't name his drug dealer, which lands him a year in juvenile prison.
Liam Gallagher (Blake & Brennan Johnson, Brenden & Brandon Sims)
Liam Gallagher is the youngest Gallagher sibling. Although the opening of the pilot implies that it's very likely that Liam is fathered by Frank's AA Sponsor, Season 1's episode Nana Gallagher Had an Affair reveals (through a paternity test) that Frank is truly Liam's biological father, despite both parents being white with no known African-American family history. Liam has served little purpose throughout the series due to his young age, however, he has been an important plot point in many instances. Monica tried to steal him to live with her and her girlfriend Roberta, however, the Gallagher siblings rallied to keep Liam with them. In Season 2, Liam was taken as collateral when Frank bet 10,000 dollars he could not pay back.
Veronica Fisher (Shanola Hampton)
Veronica "V" Fisher is one half of the Gallaghers' closest neighbors, the other half being husband Kev. Sharp and sexy, Veronica is usually willing to lend a hand, go dancing with best friend Fiona or party with Frank. She has intelligence to match her beauty and is very knowledgeable when it comes to medical issues. She had potential to become a nurse, however was fired from her nursing home for stealing supplies. Veronica and Kevin are still very much in lust and love and are known for their adventurous tastes in the bedroom.
Kevin Ball (Steve Howey)
Kevin Ball, known simply as Kev, is the bartender at Frank's favorite bar and the Gallaghers' neighbor and friend along with his long term girlfriend Veronica. Kev is a good man and can usually be persuaded to give Frank drinks on credit or cash his disability checks for him but that doesn't mean he loves living near the Gallaghers all the time. Fiona often convinces Veronica to help in some way, such as allowing the youngest Gallagher to use their bathroom, but V finds it easier to keep these things from Kev, who can often be heard uttering the words "fucking Gallaghers". Kev and Veronica are known for having the most loving and committed relationship on the show as well as their particularly adventurous sex life.
Svetlana Fisher (Isidora Goreshter)
Svetlana Fisher, formerly Milkovich, is a Russian prostitute Terry Milkovich hires to rape Mickey after he catches him and Ian together in Cascading Failures. It is later revealed that she is pregnant with what is supposedly Mickey's child, and that he is going to marry her. She is also shown living in a Massage Parlor/Brothel with a number of other prostitutes, who appear as bridesmaids at her and Mickey's wedding in Order Room Service.
Mickey Milkovich (Noel Fisher)
Mickey Milkovich is the often serious and violent older brother of Mandy Milkovich and son of Terry Milkovich. He is known as one of the most aggressive neighborhood thugs; having stolen several items from stores, being sent to juvie at an early age, and having several weapons in his household. He was first introduced on the show as a greasy thug who terrorized Ian because Mandy accused Ian of assaulting her. Mickey was closeted. At the start, it seems that Ian is the boy most affected by their relationship. Eventually, there were signs that he cared more about Ian than he was willing to let on.
Mandy Milkovich (Jany Levy Season 1, Emma Greenwell Season 2-6)
Mandy Milkovich or Amanda Milkovich is the bad girl of Ian's class, shown to be as a true side born of the tracks, Mandy also possesses a sweeter side to her. She is put out as someone not to mess with initially when Ian does not share the same feelings for her, but when she later discovers his sexuality, she agrees to act as his "beard", his fake girlfriend to help keep his sexuality secret. Mandy is noted to be promiscuous and proud of it as she seduces Lip in the second season, before agreeing to do the same to Jody in an attempt to break him and Karen up. Despite acting as Ian's beard, she has no idea that he is in fact having sex with her brother, Mickey.
