Fiona Gallagher is a main character and in the difficult position of being the oldest Gallagher child, so most of the responsibility and child-rearing falls on her young shoulders. This is due to the fact that her father Frank Gallagher is a drunk and doesn’t have any responsibility or maturity and doesn’t know how to be a father. This blossoming young woman takes it all in stride as she has clearly been doing it for a long time.
Francis “Frank” Gallagher is a main character and the dad of the six smart, spirited, independent Gallagher kids who would perhaps be better off without him.
A hopeless alcoholic and troublemaker, Frank is usually shown passed out drunk on the floors around the house when he’s not at the bar spending what little money the family has. Frank is careless, selfish and completely narcissistic as he hasn’t done anything in his life but collect disability checks and get intoxicated.
He is also abusive, conniving, and in Lip’s words, a “total f*cking asshole.” He provides next to nothing in the way of parenting or financial support and usually serves as one of the main headaches in the Gallagher household. Frank has also shown that he would give up his own children if it meant he could get booze (or money to get booze). His upbringing from his mother, Peggy, is likely the cause of his manipulative, selfish tendencies.
Phillip Ronan Gallagher, as known as Lip, is a main character. He is the second-eldest Gallagher child and the most academic. He is a straight A student with a 4.6 GPA. While he possesses above average intelligence and excellent mechanical skills, he deliberately wastes all his time acting like the rest of the people in his town.
He uses his intelligence to make money for his family, such as taking the SATs for other students (often scoring a perfect 2400) or tactically avoiding the cops when selling beer and marijuana from an ice cream truck during the summer.
Ian Clayton Gallagher was born in 1996 in Metz, and is often the most strong-hearted, persistent, and goofy -yet currently reckless- third oldest child in the Gallagher family.
He is presumably the product of a PCP-fueled affair between his mother Monica Gallagher and Frank Gallagher’s brother, Clayton Gallagher, in the summer of 1995. Ian has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder like their mother Monica.
Deborah “Debbie” Gallagher is a main character. She is the third youngest Gallagher sibling.. Although she tries to act hard and comes off as a tough girl with a spunky attitude, she is known for being helpful with good intentions and has a caring heart.
She’s willing to bring her baby brother to school for show and tell when there’s no one else to watch him, place a pillow under her father’s head when he’s passed out on the floor, and collect money for charity year round — only some of which she keeps for herself. She is one of the only Gallagher children to still be hopeful of Frank eventually behaving like a real dad, even with Frank’s continued mishaps.
Carl Francis Gallagher is a main character. He is the second youngest Gallagher child. When he was younger, he shared a room with his older brothers Lip and Ian. Carl is seen as a trouble maker in Season 1, after almost facing expulsion. In Season 2, his love for selling drugs starts when his grandmother Peg convinced him to get prescription drugs to make meth.
Veronica “V” Fisher is one half of the Gallaghers’ closest neighbors, the other half being husband Kev. Sharp and sexy, Veronica is usually willing to lend a hand, go dancing with best friend Fiona or party with Frank.
She has intelligence to match her beauty and is very knowledgeable when it comes to medical issues. She had potential to become a nurse, however was fired from her nursing home for stealing supplies.
Kevin Ball, known simply as Kev, is the bartender at Frank’s favorite bar and the Gallagher’s’ neighbor and friend along with his long term girlfriend Veronica. Kev is a good man and can usually be persuaded to give Frank drinks on credit or cash his disability checks for him but that doesn’t mean he loves living near the Gallagher’s all the time.
